Alfa Scan is proud to announce the presence of
the first 3 Tesla MRI scanner in Egypt in Maadi branch.
1.5 Tesla MRI scanners are also available in Mohandeseen and Helioplis
branches as well as Open MRI machines.
An MRI (or magnetic resonance imaging) scan is a
radiology technique that uses magnetism, radio waves, and a computer to
produce images of body structures.
The MRI scanner is a tube surrounded by a giant circular
magnet. The patient is placed on a moveable bed that is inserted into
the magnet. The magnet creates a strong magnetic field that aligns the
protons of hydrogen atoms, which are then exposed to a beam of radio
waves. This spins the various protons of the body, and they produce a
faint signal that is detected by the receiver portion of the MRI
scanner. The receiver information is processed by a computer, and an
image is produced.
The image and resolution produced by MRI is quite
detailed and can detect tiny changes of structures within the body. For
some procedures, contrast agents, such as gadolinium, are used to
increase the accuracy of the images.

An MRI scan can be used as an extremely accurate method
of disease detection throughout the body. In the head, trauma to the
brain can be seen as bleeding or swelling. Other abnormalities often
found include brain aneurysms, stroke, tumors of the brain, as well as
tumors or inflammation of the spine.
Neurosurgeons use an MRI scan not only in defining brain
anatomy but in evaluating the integrity of the spinal cord after trauma.
It is also used when considering problems associated with the vertebrae
or intervertebral discs of the spine. An MRI scan can evaluate the
structure of the heart and aorta, where it can detect aneurysms or
tears.
It provides valuable information on glands and organs
within the abdomen, and accurate information about the structure of the
joints, soft tissues, and bones of the body. Often, surgery can be
deferred or more accurately directed after knowing the results of an MRI
scan.

An MRI scan is a painless radiology technique that has
the advantage of avoiding x-ray radiation exposure. There are no known
side effects of an MRI scan. The benefits of an MRI scan relate to its
precise accuracy in detecting structural abnormalities of the body.

IF YOU HAVE A CARDIAC PACEMAKER or NEUROSTIMULATOR.
-
If you have CEREBRAL ANEURYSM CLIPS contact us
immediately. Depending on the type of clip, we may not be able to
perform an MRI.
-
If you have any other type of biomedical implant,
please call our hotline 16171 or (202) 3336-3310 (Mohandeseen),
(202) 2417 5556 (Heliopolis) or (202) 2528 4888 (Maadi) to speak with a
radiologist if you have any questions. It is best to call between 10
a.m. and 10 p.m., Saturday through Thursday, because the MRI exam
may not be possible.
-
Also tell us if you had any brain, eye, ear or other
surgery or if you are pregnant.
-
Please call us if you weight over 130 Kgs.
-
If you are CLAUSTROPHOBIC or a young child or semi or
unconcious, please call us; we may need to schedule your appointment
for specific times with sedation.

When you
were referred by your physician for a radiological exam, you may have
been told about certain instructions to be done prior to the exam, or
when you were scheduling your appointment, the scheduler should have
informed you about the preparations that should be done prior to your
exam. If you did not or if you want a recheck, you can refer to the
information listed below.
Keep in mind that you may have
been given some additional or different instructions, based on your own
particular circumstances. If you have any questions, please call our
hotline 16171 or (202) 3336-3310 (Mohandeseen),
(202) 2417 5556 (Heliopolis) or (202) 2528 4888 (Maadi) to speak with a
radiologist if you have any questions. It is best to call between 10
a.m. and 10 p.m., Saturday through Thursday.
Instructions
Bring referrals and insurance information along
with your prescription or request slip. Bring with you any other
studies (CT scans, x-rays, ultrasound) that were performed at Alfa
Scan or other hospitals so that we can better interpret and plan
your MRI examination.
Please plan on arriving 15 minutes before your examination.
If you do not arrive on time it is possible that we may need to
reschedule your study for another day.
For your safety, you will be asked questions concerning implants
and metal by technologists and physicians. You will also be asked to
remove ALL jewelry, watches, hair clips, dentures, glasses and
hearing aides. It may be easiest if you wear as few of these items
as possible. You will be asked to place all items including your
credit cards and wallet into a your changing suite and change into a
patient gown.

One of our radiologists will
discuss your health history and can answer any questions that you might
have.
The MRI technologist will help you
get onto the scan table and position you for the exam. The table will
slide into a cylinder shaped unit. There is an intercom system so that
you can hear and talk to the technologist who is operating the scanner.
During the exam you will hear a
knocking sound. It is important that you hold perfectly still during
this knocking sound. The study takes 30-60 minutes, depending on the
type of scan required. The scan is very sensitive to motion. If you move
even a little during the scan, the entire scan may need to be repeated.
Certain exams may need an
injection of contrast material (Gadolinium) to better visualize the area
of interest. This requires an intravenous injection towards the end of
the procedure.
You can resume your normal
activities immediately after the examination.
The radiologist's report of
the results will be ready within 24 hours. Your doctor will discuss the
results of the test with you.
